Country: United States (New York). ## Verified facts (National Park Service / Statue City Cruises / Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation unless noted) - The National Park Service charges no entrance fee; the islands are reached only by ferry, and Statue City Cruises is the ONLY NPS-authorized ferry, departing from Castle Clinton (The Battery, NYC) and Liberty State Park (Jersey City, NJ). - General admission: round-trip ferry, Liberty Island, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty Museum, the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, audio tour in 12 languages; no access inside the monument. - Pedestal: 215 steps or an elevator (two visitors at a time) to the Fort Wood level and the observation balcony. - Crown: 162 steps from the top of the pedestal, 377 from the ground, no elevator; reservation only, about 500 a day, 4 tickets per order, one visit per person per six months, photo ID; minimum height 42 in / 1.1 m, children cannot be carried; only water, a phone, a camera and medicine may be carried up. - NPS: be on a ferry before 1 pm to see both islands; the operator says entry after 2 pm leaves no time for Ellis Island. - Open every day except Thanksgiving and 25 December; hours follow the ferry schedule. Designed by Auguste Bartholdi, framework by Gustave Eiffel, pedestal by Richard Morris Hunt, dedicated 28 October 1886. The torch has been closed since the Black Tom explosion of 30 July 1916; the current torch dates from 1986 and the original is in the museum (opened 16 May 2019).
